This course will meet virtually Jun 26-27, 2024 from 1:00-4:45 pm EST and is eligible for 6.5 SHRM/HRCI re-certification credits. Please be sure you can attend all classes before registering.

This is the third of three courses that constitute the Managing People sequence. You can also consider signing up for Managing People: Leadership or Managing People: Helping People Work Better, the other two courses in the sequence (none are pre-requisites for the other, but they do build on course material).

A counseling session is a discussion about an apparent performance problem. Every supervisor will eventually conduct such a meeting. It is imperative that individuals understand the relationship between that important activity and the disciplinary process. Many supervisors confuse this discussion with a disciplinary penalty. This course will treat a counseling session as a method to avoid discipline. By placing these two topics together, we can help those who must use these tools to better understand how they relate.

Learning Objectives: At the end of this course, students will be able to:

  • The definition of a counseling session;
  • How to conduct a counseling session;
  • How to document counseling sessions, including how to write an effective counseling memo;
  • The relationship among counseling, performance appraisal and discipline;
  • Ethical standards associated with the application of the disciplinary process; and,
  • Practice applying those standards to disciplinary cases.

Registration fee is $295. Complete registration below. If you have any questions, feel free to contact Education Program Coordinator, Sanjay Saverimuttu (sxs7397@psu.edu). Transactions are eligible for a full refund until the first day of classes, afterwards no refunds will be accepted.
