Field Human Resources Director - East Region (Supply Chain / Logistics)

From a human resources perspective, winning is all about attracting, developing, and retaining the best associates. In order to meet the talent demands for our growing business, Penske Logistics is seeking a human resources leader who will be responsible for leading talent acquisition and development for our fast growing East Region Operations. This individual will report to the Senior Vice President of Human Resources and will be based in our East Region office in Reading, PA.


There Are Five Key Traits That The Successful Candidate Will Possess

Our U.S. operation has four field Directors of Human Resources, each of whom is responsible for planning and executing HR strategy for their respective regions. There are five key traits that the successful candidate will possess: 

  • A passion for recruiting and developing talent.
  • An ability to build and manage a high performing HR team;
  • Demonstrable strong HR generalist knowledge;
  • Executive level communication and follow-up skills;
  • Interpersonal skills that inspire commitment and teamwork.


This role is ideal for someone who enjoys a mix of tactical field HR work and strategic talent planning and strategy. This position will also require a business partner approach to ensure HR is fully aligned with all levels of leadership in terms of meeting both the region’s and HR’s business goals.


Major Responsibilities

  • People Management: Hires, coaches, develops, and directs 3-5 HR professionals in a matrixed reporting relationship with their Area Vice-President of Operations.
  • Change Management: Drives organizational change according to the business's human capital management strategy and ensures operational excellence. Ensures execution of that strategy through the Area teams. Acts as HR's primary contact with Sr. Vice-Presidents of Operations, for HR matters within their Regions. Removes barriers to HR Managers' focus, goals and objectives, and helps Area HR Managers prioritize.
  • Associate Engagement: Manages Associate Opinion Survey activities for the region(s), ensuring that Area HR Managers are driving results at the local level. Takes periodic pulse checks when visiting locations. Works with local operations managers and HR team to remedy engagement issues.
  • Associate Development: Manages talent development at all levels leveraging internal and external training tools, including mentorship for high potential managers. Ensures that appropriate leadership is accurately represented in succession management tool, and actively utilizes that tool for planning purposes. Ensures that diverse pipelines exist for managerial positions.
  • Performance Management: Drives performance management philosophy through their Regions, and ensures execution.
  • Labor Relations: Oversees Area HR Managers' union risk assessments at locations and union avoidance training. Works with VP Labor Relations to develop regional union avoidance/union management strategy. Participates in contract negotiations as necessary.
  • Associate Relations: Works with the operations Managers and Area HR Managers in their consultations with leaders on associate relations issues, escalating to Corporate or Legal when necessary. Ensures consistency in the interpretation and application of HR policies across the Areas. Looks for patterns of issues across the Region, and elevates issues to Corporate as necessary.
  • Diversity: Drives Company's Diversity and Inclusion strategy through the Regions. Ensures that regional leadership has taken Diversity Awareness Training, and that training is being driven to manager levels by Area HR Managers. Watches for EEO claim trending and challenges HR Managers in diversity sourcing, hiring, and promotions.
  • New Business: Manages new business HR due diligence and work with Area HR team to ensure start-up is adequately staffed and ready for business by the go-live date.



  • Exceptional communication and influencing skills - strong EQ
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent relevant work experience
  • 3-5 years HR leadership experience managing HR professionals
  • 10-15 years Human Resources experience in a large, decentralized, partially unionized environment, or strong management background with exceptional track record in getting things done through others, and a thorough understanding of the business
  • Demonstrated ability to drive results, even without direct reports
  • Knowledge of employment law
  • Ability to work well independently and complete tasks with minimal supervision; self-driven with a sense of urgency
  • Detail oriented with strong organizational and documentation skills
  • This is a heavy travel position (60 - 70%)
  • Regular, predictable, full attendance is an essential function of the job
  • Willingness to travel as necessary, work the required schedule, work at the specific location required, complete Penske employment application, submit to a background investigation (to include past employment, education, and criminal history) and drug screening are required.

  • While performing the duties of this Job, the associate is regularly required to stand; walk; sit and talk or hear. The associate is frequently required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel and reach with hands and arms.
