From Charlie Bowers ’56 LMR:
It excites me and comforts me to be a small part in the student’s lives by offering this scholarship. I wish it were more. When you figure that 6 billion of us humans are spinning on this orb called Earth at 1,000 miles per hour, while traveling through space in orbit at 63,000 miles per hour, it boggles the mind.
Yet, we must remember, we all must learn to understand those who are socially, physically, linguistically, religiously, and economically different than ourselves. We have the same objective - to live a life as good as we can for the time we are given. By studying abroad, you will be, or have been, immersed among people who are different, but who can be friendly, considerate and as loving as your friends at home.
I have been there - 1 year in Germany in the U.S. Army and to 50 other countries for as long as a month or more, some living with families or hosting families in my home. This is the motivation for the Study Abroad Scholarship.
I have had many letters from recipients who have shared with me the vast changes studying abroad has made in their lives, their outlook on their future and the gain in self confidence toward international exposure. Most intend to continue to travel in the future.
To net it out - their mental outlook leaves them altered and expanded. More importantly, it will influence how they make decisions about their future.
It gives me great satisfaction that the scholarship is a success and that I have passed on a value to others who come after me.
To those awarded, I ask only that when you are older and successful (because you will be both) that you do the same for some young PSU student to help them. You will achieve the same satisfaction as well!
Thank you one and all!
