LER 400 Comparative Employment Relations Systems (3) Analysis of structure and elements of employment relations.
LER 401 The Law of Labor-Management Relations (3) Development of Anglo-American law regulating collective bargaining, with emphasis on American labor-management relations under Wagner, Taft-Hartley, and other acts. Prerequisite: 3 credits in Labor and Employment Relations or Political Science.
LER 404 Trends in Employment Relations (3) Current structural and procedural conditions encouraging stability or conflict in collective bargaining. Prerequisites: LER 100, LER 104 or ECON 315
LER 411 Employment Relations Organizations (3) Organizational factors in the actions of trade unions, other employee organizations, and their consequences for workers and society. Prerequisite: 3 credits in Labor and Employment Relations or 3 credits in Sociology.
LER 414W Labor and Employment Relations Theory (3) Content and implications of major and minor theories of labor and employment relations. Prerequisites: 6 credits in Labor and Employment Relations.
LER 424 Employment Compensation (3) Development and management of employment compensation systems. Prerequisite: LER 100.
LER 425 Employee Benefits (3) The examination of employee benefits programs used by employers to meet the welfare needs of employees and their families. Prerequisite: LER 201 and 6th semester standing.
LER 426 Staffing and Training Strategies in Organizations (3) This course focuses on the theory and practice of human resource staffing and training in organizations.
LER 434 Collective Bargaining and Contract Administration (3) Survey of the collective bargaining process, including underlying theories, current practice, administration of the collective agreement, and likely future trends. Prerequisite: LER 100.
LER 435 Labor Relations in the Public Sector (3) Analysis of labor relations problems within different areas of public employment. Prerequisite: 3 credits in Labor and Employment Relations.
LER 437 Alternative Dispute Resolution (3) This course examines the nature and implications for employment relations or alternative dispute resolution procedures, including arbitration, mediation, peer review, and alternative negotiation techniques. This course will address the growing role of alternative dispute resolution procedures in employment relations. It will examine the philosophy and major techniques of alternative dispute resolution. The course will also examine how alternative dispute resolution affects the implementation of substantive employment rights and its role in the governance of employment relations.
LER 444 Occupational Health: Policy and Practice (3) The role of employees, unions, employers, and government in dealing with work-related health issues. Prerequisite: LER 100, 104, or sixth-semester standing.
LER 445Y Politics of Affirmative Action (3) Examines the history, politics and economics of affirmative action in the context of racial discrimination, and racial inequality, the problem affirmative action was designed to address.
LER 458W (HIST) History of American Organized Labor Since 1877 (3) A study of selected problems in the history of American labor organizations, especially since 1877. Prerequisite: HIST 021 or LER 100.
LER 460 Human Resource Ethics (3) Each student is expected to learn several frameworks used to make moral judgments. The students are expected to develop proficiency in applying these frameworks to common human resources questions and in recognizing settings where moral judgment is required. Prerequisites: LER 100.
LER 464 Leadership in Groups and Organizations (3) Survey of theory, research, and practice related to processes by which individuals in groups and organizations exercise influence.
LER 465 Collective Decision Making (3) Presents a broad overview of theories and practices in decision making as related to choice making in organizations.
LER 470 Employee Involvement (3) Historical, theoretical, legal, and employment relations aspects of employee involvement in the United States and other countries. Prerequisite: LER 100.
LER 472 Work-Life Issues (3) Exploration of the changing roles of work and family.
LER 475H Labor and Globalization (3) Examines globalization and its impact on work and employment around the world. Special emphasis on the case of South Africa and the United States.
LER 480 Current Issues in Human Resources (3) Examines current issues in the field of human resource management, including innovative work schedules, telecommuting, non-traditional office environments, etc. Prerequisite: 3 credits of LER.
LER 495 Labor and Employment Relations Internship (1-12) Supervised practicum in labor relations setting with union, management, or government agency. Prerequisite: prior approval by Department.

HRER 500 COMPARATIVE EMPLOYMENT RELATIONS (3-6) Examines the employment relationship in a global context, including the impact of globalization on employment relations and human resources in the U.S., in other developed countries, and in developing countries. Students should take HRER 504 and 505 prior to enrolling in this course.
HRER 501 LABOR AND EMPLOYMENT LAW (3) This seminar deals with the development and application of legal rules covering employment relationships (other than collective bargaining) in the United States.
HRER 502 ORGANIZATION OF THE WORKPLACE (3) Offers a detailed analysis of the workplace, its organizational and technological influences on various labor processes from high-tech to labor intensive work settings.
HRER 504 SEMINAR IN EMPLOYMENT RELATIONS (3) Will provide an in-depth examination of employment, or labor-management, relations. Discussion of theories of employment relations will provide a framework for the course.
HRER 505 SEMINAR IN HUMAN RESOURCES (3) Takes a strategic planning approach to human resource management. Intended to expose the student to the intersection of human resource management and the strategic goals of the organization.

HRER 512 RESEARCH METHODS IN HUMAN RESOURCES AND EMPLOYMENT RELATIONS I (3) Introduction to empirical analysis of the employment relationship through training in issues identification, model building, specification, sampling and data collection, quantitative and qualitative analysis, recognition of statistical significance and error, and careful interpretation of results.

HRER 516 LABOR MARKET ANALYSIS (3) Examines neoclassical, institutional and systemic economic theories and empirical approaches to understanding external and internal labor markets and their dynamics.
HRER 535 LABOR AND HUMAN RESOURCES IN THE PUBLIC SECTOR (3) Will provide an in-depth examination of employment relations in the public sector.
HRER 536 LABOR DIVERSITY IN THE WORKPLACE (3) Explores the historical and contemporary situations of women and minorities in the workplace. Focuses explicitly on the forces which created and perpetuated the secondary status of women and minorities, including forces in the home, community, the labor movement, as well as the workplace and the larger economy.
