Helmut J. Golatz Endowed Internship in Labor Studies
Earlier this year, the Labor Studies and Industrial Relations Alumni Program Group (APG) voted to establish the Helmut J. Golatz Endowed Internship in Labor Studies. The faculty fully supported this recommendation. The Golatz Internship will serve as a lasting memorial to his achievements and contributions to the department.

Helmut Golatz believed strongly the universities have an obligation to make their expertise and resources available to the wider community As his background and interests were focused in the labor movement, he devoted his career to better equipping union leaders and activists to represent their members. The department and the LSIR APG share Helmut Golatz’s belief in lifelong learning, and remain committed to making such opportunities available to LSIR alumni I and to all segments of the industrial relations community.

In the spirit of this commitment, the Golatz Internship will provide financial assistance to one student in the department’s graduate program each year. This student will then have the opportunity to play an active part in planning, developing, and administrating the department’s outreach programs.

The graduate intern’s work will reflect the ways in which today’s department has built upon the legacy of Helmut Golatz. The department works very hard to produce students whose experience and coursework expose them to both labor and management issues, making them better, more well-rounded advocates for positive change in their future careers. The Golatz Intern would work with the department’s faculty, students, and alumni to develop outreach activities to further those goals.
